About Alpaca Fiber

Alpaca fiber

Alpaca fiber is one of the finest and most luxurious fibers in the world. Warmer than wool and softer than cashmere, it is hypoallergenic, lightweight, and durable. Sourced from the Peruvian Andes, it grows naturally in over 40 shades, ranging from ivory to black, including shades of grey and brown. Perfect for high-quality, comfortable garments.

From the Andes to You

A cousin of the llama, alpacas graze at altitudes of 10,000 to 14,000 feet in the harsh high plains of the Peruvian Andes. Their thick, sumptuous coats grow naturally in more than 40 shades. Alpaca fiber is warmer and stronger than wool, and so resistant to saturation that it’s nearly water-repellent. It’s also lanolin-free, making it hypoallergenic. The lighter shades of the fiber absorb dyes beautifully, making it an invaluable material for designers looking to create vibrant, colorful pieces.

  • Luxuriously soft to the touch with a silky sheen.
  • Comfortable and versatile to wear.
  • Grows naturally in dozens of beautiful shades.
  • Hypoallergenic.
  • Using Alpaca fiber promotes sustainable agriculture in the Andes.
Frequently Asked Questions

Is alpaca wool itchy or scratchy?
Not at all. Unlike traditional sheep's wool, alpaca fiber is naturally smooth and doesn't contain lanolin, making it soft against the skin and ideal even for those with sensitivities.

How do I care for my alpaca product?
We recommend hand washing in cold water with a mild detergent, then laying flat to dry. Avoid wringing or tumble drying to keep the fibers in their best shape for longer.

Is alpaca eco-friendly?
Yes. Alpacas have a low environmental footprint — they graze gently without damaging soil, consume less water than most livestock, and their fiber is 100% natural and biodegradable.

Why is alpaca warmer than regular wool?
Alpaca fibers are hollow at the core, which traps heat more efficiently than standard wool. This makes alpaca products exceptionally warm while remaining lightweight and breathable.

Product Care

There are two ways of washing your alpaca products

  • Hand washing
  • dry cleaning

Most products require hand washing, however it is recommended for a once a year dry clean. Structured coats, finely woven items or accessories should only be dry-cleaned.

Hand washing

When hand washing is advised, we recommend the following method:

  • Use cool water ( 85ºF / 27ºC max.) and a mild soap or a human hair shampoo,
  • Do not use the hand wash cycle in a washing machine.
  • Never use chlorine bleach. Woolite is not recommended.
  • Remove any excess water carefully, avoiding any wringing or twisting.
  • Dry the product in a flat position in the shade.
  • By hand, carefully remove any wrinkles and straighten seams and facings. Never use a brush.

Dry Cleaning

When dry cleaning is advised, we recommend the following:

  • Seek out a reputable cleaner that is a member of the International Fabricare Institute.
  • Bring with you any labels or hangtags that contain fiber information or care instructions.
  • Outfits with several pieces should be cleaned at the same time to avoid any color discrepancies resulting from cleaning.
  • Inform the cleaner of any spots or stains; they will want to treat some stains before the dry cleaning process.
  • Your cleaner may also provide mothproofing. Request this service, if needed.

Storage

  • Before storing, make sure that the item is fully dry.
  • There are various techniques to avoid damage resulting from the presence of moths. It will be better if you store the product in a sealed cedar chest, a freezer (in a zip lock bag) or any moth-protected environment
  • Sachets using dried lavender are also useful.
  • We do not recommend the use of mothballs.
