From Our Mulgoa Farm to Your Feet

The story behind the alpaca socks we choose to stock

When people hear 'alpaca farm', they usually picture a straight line: alpaca → fleece → clothing → shop. And to be fair, that sounds like it should make sense.

But in reality, it’s not quite how the industry works — and we’ve always believed it’s better to just be upfront about that.

At Black Regal Alpacas, we’re a working alpaca stud based in Mulgoa, NSW. What we focus on day to day is raising and improving our animals — not running a textile manufacturing operation.

A Bit About Life on Our Farm

Most days here are pretty simple. We’re out checking paddocks, watching the animals, managing feed, and keeping things moving.

Alpacas are quiet animals, but they’re all different. Some come straight over, others hang back and observe.

Over time, you get to know them — and understand how small factors influence fleece quality. That’s where our focus sits: in the animals and the fibre they produce.

What We Actually Produce

Each year, our alpacas are shorn and we produce fleece from our herd.

From that, we offer raw alpaca fleece and spun alpaca yarn in small batches.

These are seasonal, limited in supply, and often snapped up by people who want to work directly with fibre from a known farm source.

Why We Don’t Turn That Into Clothing

Turning fleece into clothing like socks isn’t a small on-farm job. It requires mills, large-scale processing, and consistent production runs.

For a farm like ours, it’s not always practical or commercially sensible — and importantly, it doesn’t automatically produce a better product.

What We Do Instead

Rather than trying to make everything ourselves, we focus on sourcing quality products.
We look at fibre content, comfort, durability, and real-world performance — then select products that meet our standards.

How That Applies to Our Socks

Socks are one of the most popular alpaca products, and also one where quality varies a lot.

We only stock socks that feel warm without overheating, hold their shape, and perform well in everyday use.

Why Being a Farm Still Matters

Being a working alpaca farm gives us firsthand knowledge of fibre quality and lets us assess products more critically than a typical reseller.

Final Thought

At the end of the day, most people don’t care about the full supply chain. They care if a product feels good and works.

That’s what we focus on — offering alpaca products chosen for real performance, backed by genuine farm experience.
